AI Act bans and AI literacy duty start to apply in the EU

See how this story connects

The AI Act’s earliest provisions applied from 2 February 2025: the definition of an AI system, the AI literacy duty and the list of prohibited practices. On 4 February the Commission published non-binding guidelines on prohibited practices such as harmful manipulation, social scoring and real-time remote biometric identification, followed by guidelines on the AI system definition. The Commission notes that authoritative interpretation rests with the Court of Justice.

Why it matters

Companies and public bodies in the EU had to stop banned AI uses and train staff on AI from this date, and the guidelines show how the Commission reads each ban.
