DeepSeek memory-saving technology may reduce model accuracy, researchers find
See how this story connectsA paper led by ByteDance researchers, with co-authors affiliated with Princeton University, Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, was published in late September 2026. It says DeepSeek’s efforts to reduce the memory needed to process lengthy inputs may come at the expense of reliability, as the models were more likely to miss the same information when it appeared in certain positions in a document. The paper says the phenomenon appears in DeepSeek-V4, V4.1 and all compressed models the authors pretrained. The study has not been peer-reviewed.
Why it matters
The paper is a rare challenge to the memory-saving technology that has helped DeepSeek close the gap with OpenAI and Anthropic at low cost, though the study has not been peer-reviewed.
