Baidu chief executive Robin Li announced Ernie 4.0 at Baidu World 2023 in Beijing on 17 October 2023, saying it improved understanding, generation, reasoning and memory. Chief technology officer Haifeng Wang said overall performance rose by almost 30% since the September beta. Ernie 4.0 opened to invited users of Ernie Bot, and businesses could apply for API access through Baidu’s Qianfan platform.

Why it matters

Chinese businesses got a newer domestic frontier model through an approved service, two months after Ernie Bot opened to the public under China’s generative AI rules.
