Anthropic says Claude now leads 26% of its AI research and development
See how this story connectsAnthropic’s institute published measurements of the pace of AI development inside the company, with data to August 2026. Using Epoch AI’s automation levels across about 15,000 sampled tasks, Claude leads about 26% of Anthropic’s AI R&D work; no measured work is fully autonomous and more than 90% is at or above the collaborates level. About 30,000 agents work at any time on its main internal platform; online monitors see every action before execution and blocked about 0.002% of more than a billion decisions in August, and offline monitors flag about 100,000 transcripts a week, with about 50 going to human review. In a July compute snapshot about 6% of AI R&D compute went to safety work. The authors say labs should publish such metrics on public methods, have third parties verify them, and treat compute as a lever for any coordinated pacing effort.
Why it matters
A frontier lab has put numbers on how much of its own research its models now lead, and proposed that the numbers be verified from outside.
