Amodei calls for AI labs to slow the pace of model improvement

See how this story connects

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei published an essay calling for AI companies to deliberately slow how fast they improve model capabilities, which he called pacing the frontier, to buy one or two years for safeguards. He proposed independent evaluators embedded inside Anthropic, similar oversight across leading US labs backed by federal regulation, and later international coordination. OpenAI’s Sam Altman endorsed the idea the same day and committed to independent evaluators.

Why it matters

The heads of two leading labs publicly backed slowing frontier progress, after the Hugging Face and AISI incidents.
