Claude computes a nine-loop particle-physics amplitude; the human record was eight
See how this story connectsAnthropic physicists used Claude on the Claude Science platform to compute the nine-loop six-particle amplitude in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory, answering a challenge set by former theoretical physicist Matt von Hippel. The previous record was eight loops, reached by Lance Dixon and collaborators in 2023, and most scattering amplitudes have been calculated only to two loops. Dixon independently validated the result. The bootstrap calculation used about $100 of compute, roughly 96 CPUs for a week, and an end user would pay about $1,000 to $2,000 mostly for running Claude. A group led by Song He separately computed the symbol, one piece of the nine-loop amplitude, with some help from GPT-6. Von Hippel writes that the work used known methods with more compute than usually attempted and showed no new physical principles.
Why it matters
A model did most of a frontier-of-field physics calculation for about $100 of compute. The physicists involved say it executed a known recipe and did not supply a new idea.
