Mexico announces Coatlicue, a public AI supercomputer planned at 314 petaflops

See how this story connects

Mexico’s government presented Coatlicue, a planned public supercomputer, at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning briefing on 26 November 2025. José Merino, head of the Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency, said it would reach 314 petaflops with about 15,000 GPUs, seven times the most powerful machine in Latin America, in Brazil, for AI, simulation and data analysis. Excélsior reported a cost of about 6bn pesos, a committee was to choose the site in January 2026.

Why it matters

Mexican researchers and agencies would get state-owned AI compute at home, so public AI work would rely less on foreign cloud capacity.
