KDDI buys Sharp’s Sakai LCD plant to turn it into an AI data centre with NVIDIA GB200 systems

See how this story connects

KDDI said on 4 April 2025 that it had agreed to buy the land and buildings of Sharp’s Sakai plant in Osaka and convert it into the Osaka Sakai Data Center, due to start operating by the end of fiscal 2025. The site will use NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 systems, hybrid liquid and air cooling, and electricity generated entirely from renewable sources. KDDI will offer the GPUs to companies through its WAKONX business platform, including for training models with trillions of parameters.

Why it matters

A former display factory became domestic GPU capacity that Japanese companies can rent without sending data to overseas clouds.
