Canada’s AI and Data Act dies as Parliament is prorogued

See how this story connects

Governor General Mary Simon prorogued Parliament until 24 March 2025 at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s request on 6 January 2025, the day he announced his resignation. Bill C-27, which held the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act and a new federal privacy law, had not received royal assent and ended, as did the Online Harms Act, Bill C-63.

Why it matters

Canada was left with no federal AI statute for private companies, so businesses rely on privacy law, sector regulators such as OSFI and the voluntary code.
