Taiwan’s NSTC releases TAIDE-LX-8B, a Traditional Chinese model built on Llama 3

See how this story connects

Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council released TAIDE-LX-8B, an 8-billion-parameter upgrade of its TAIDE language model built on Meta’s Llama 3. The earlier TAIDE-LX-7B, based on Llama 2, had been released on 15 April 2024. The team trained the model mostly on Taiwanese government and academic documents and aims it at companies and financial institutions that do not want their data sent to foreign-trained models.

Why it matters

Taiwanese firms and agencies got a locally tuned open model for Traditional Chinese work, an early step in the island’s sovereign AI effort built on a foreign open-weights base.
