Brazil’s data authority orders Meta to stop using users’ data to train AI

See how this story connects

Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) published a preventive measure on 2 July 2024 suspending Meta’s new privacy policy, which allowed public posts on Facebook and Instagram to be used to train Meta’s AI models. The ANPD cited an imminent risk of serious and irreparable harm to users’ rights, gave Meta five working days to comply and set a daily fine of R$50,000 for non-compliance. Meta said it was disappointed and that its approach complied with Brazilian law.

Why it matters

AI developers in Brazil learned that the data protection authority will act before training starts on user posts, and that public social media data still falls under the LGPD.
