RFdiffusion designs new proteins from scratch, Nature paper shows

See how this story connects

David Baker’s group at the University of Washington’s Institute for Protein Design published RFdiffusion in Nature, a diffusion model built by fine-tuning RoseTTAFold that designs new protein backbones for binders, symmetric assemblies, enzyme active sites and therapeutic and metal-binding motifs. The software is openly available.

Why it matters

Protein designers gained an open tool to design binders and enzymes from scratch, work that fed into Baker’s share of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
