ONC finalises HTI-1 rule with transparency duties for predictive algorithms in health records

See how this story connects

The US Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT released the HTI-1 final rule on 13 December 2023; it appeared in the Federal Register on 9 January 2024. A new decision support interventions criterion replaces the old clinical decision support one and requires certified health IT to make source-attribute information about predictive models available to users and to run risk management for them. Developers had to update certified products by 31 December 2024, and from 1 January 2025 only the new criterion counts towards the Base EHR definition.

Why it matters

Electronic health record vendors serving US hospitals must disclose how predictive models in their software were built and tested, giving clinicians information to judge them.
