House of Lords committee tells UK to ‘proceed with caution’ on AI weapon systems

See how this story connects

The House of Lords AI in Weapon Systems Committee, chaired by Lord Lisvane, published ‘Proceed with Caution: Artificial Intelligence in Weapon Systems’ on 1 December 2023. It asked the government to lead international efforts on autonomous weapons, including a ban on AI in nuclear command, control and communications, to adopt an operational definition of autonomous weapon systems and to keep human control at every stage of a system’s life. It also said Ministry of Defence procurement may need revolutionary change.

Why it matters

The Ministry of Defence had to answer in writing on a definition, nuclear command and procurement, and suppliers selling AI weapons to the UK faced a parliamentary record of what oversight the Lords expected.
