Moorfields and UCL publish RETFound, an open foundation model trained on 1.6m retinal images

See how this story connects

Nature published RETFound on 13 September 2023, a foundation model built by UCL and Moorfields Eye Hospital from about 1.6 million NHS retinal images. The authors report it detects eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma and predicts systemic conditions including heart failure, stroke and Parkinson’s disease from eye scans. The model is released on GitHub for any institution to use.

Why it matters

Hospitals and researchers outside large technology companies got a freely available medical imaging foundation model to adapt for their own patients, built from public health service data.
