Peru’s executive published Law 31814 in the official gazette El Peruano on 5 July 2023. The law promotes the use of AI for economic and social development, names the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, through its Secretariat of Government and Digital Transformation, as the national technical and normative authority for AI, and sets six guiding principles including risk-based security standards and privacy. It gave the executive 90 business days from entry into force to issue regulations.

Why it matters

Peru put an AI statute on its books in 2023 and gave one government office the power to direct and supervise AI use, though binding duties waited for regulations.
