Teardown finds SMIC-made 7nm Kirin 9000s chip in Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro

See how this story connects

Huawei began selling the Mate 60 Pro in late August 2023, during a visit to China by US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. A TechInsights teardown reported on 4 and 5 September found its Kirin 9000s processor was made by SMIC on its most advanced 7nm process, despite US limits on Huawei’s access to chipmaking tools since 2019.

Why it matters

The teardown showed SMIC making 7nm chips in China under US tool restrictions, which an analyst called a “slap in the face” to the US.
