UN Security Council holds its first meeting on AI and peace and security

See how this story connects

The United Kingdom used its July presidency to convene the Security Council’s first meeting on the risks of AI to international peace and security on 18 July 2023. Secretary-General António Guterres backed calls for a new UN body on AI and said his policy brief A New Agenda for Peace would recommend a legally binding instrument by 2026 to prohibit lethal autonomous weapons that lack human control and to regulate the rest. The brief, published that month, makes that recommendation.

Why it matters

Military AI and autonomous weapons reached the Security Council’s agenda, and the UN Secretary-General set a 2026 target for a treaty on weapons without human control.
