EU ministers agree their position on platform work, including algorithmic management

See how this story connects

EU employment ministers agreed the Council’s general approach on the platform work directive on 12 June 2023. Workers would have to be told when automated monitoring and decision-making systems are used on them, those systems would be overseen by staff protected from adverse treatment, and significant decisions such as suspending an account would need human oversight. A worker meeting three of seven criteria would be presumed an employee.

Why it matters

Delivery riders, drivers and other platform workers in the EU moved closer to legal rights over algorithmic management by apps, which negotiators then took into talks with Parliament.
