ICMR issues ethical guidelines for AI in biomedical research and healthcare

See how this story connects

The Indian Council of Medical Research published Ethical Guidelines for Application of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Research and Healthcare in March 2023. The guidelines set ethical principles, an ethics review process, governance of AI use and informed consent rules, and are addressed to developers, clinicians, researchers, ethics committees, sponsors and funders. ICMR calls them a living document.

Why it matters

Hospitals, health AI developers and ethics committees in India gained a national reference for reviewing AI studies and deployments, years before any AI-specific law.
