Stanford researchers introduce Next-Concept Modeling, generating text coarse to fine in parallel

See how this story connects

Researchers at Stanford’s Hazy Research lab, including Christopher Ré and Azalia Mirhoseini, introduced Next-Concept Modeling (NCM), which encodes text as a hierarchy of discrete codes from coarse to fine and generates one level at a time, predicting every code within a level in parallel. Against the strongest diffusion language models at matched scale, they report better or comparable quality while running 21 times faster on LM1B, 10 times faster on OpenWebText and 31 times faster on XSum summarisation on one NVIDIA H100, with 4 to 5 times fewer training tokens, and better Sudoku solving than autoregressive and diffusion baselines. The paper is on arXiv and the code on GitHub.

Why it matters

It is a faster alternative to diffusion language models for parallel text generation, tested so far on research benchmarks at matched scale, not against frontier chat models.
