Epic and Microsoft add Azure OpenAI generative AI to Epic’s health record software

See how this story connects

Microsoft and Epic announced on 17 April 2023 that they would build Azure OpenAI Service into Epic’s electronic health record software. The first features draft replies to patient messages and let staff query Epic’s SlicerDicer reporting tool in plain language. UC San Diego Health, UW Health and Stanford Health Care were among the first to deploy the message drafting.

Why it matters

Large language models reached clinicians inside the health record system many US hospitals already use, so health systems had to set rules for AI-drafted patient messages.
