Anthropic says new defences cut the data distillers take from Claude by about 90 to 99 per cent
See how this story connectsAnthropic said new methods have reduced the amount of data harvested by distillers from Claude by around 90 to 99 per cent, with defences focused on making Claude’s reasoning transcripts harder to reach. It described distillation as covert, industrial-scale campaigns through networks of fraudulent accounts, said Zhipu distilled the cyber capabilities of leading US models while building GLM-5.3, and cited a case in which requests to Moonshot’s Kimi models were forwarded to Claude. Anthropic said it has turned away meaningful revenue and trillions of tokens of paying traffic from distillers, and that some changes required legitimate users to update their integrations.
Why it matters
Developers whose integrations read Claude’s reasoning may need changes, and labs that build on distilled outputs lose a cheap route to frontier capabilities.
