Zelensky orders a separate Unmanned Systems Forces branch for Ukraine’s military

See how this story connects

On 6 February 2024 President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree directing the Cabinet of Ministers and the General Staff to set up the Unmanned Systems Forces as a separate branch of the armed forces. He cited drones’ results on land, in the air and at sea, including in the Black Sea, and listed training, production and drone-operator units as priorities.

Why it matters

Ukraine became a large-scale testbed for drone warfare, and a dedicated branch gave drone procurement, training and autonomy work their own command and budget line.
