Taiwan passes a ‘chips act’ giving 25% tax credits for advanced R&D

See how this story connects

Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan passed amendments to Articles 10-2 and 72 of the Statute for Industrial Innovation on 7 January 2023. Companies can credit 25% of qualifying forward-looking R&D spending and 5% of spending on new advanced-process equipment against corporate income tax from 2023 to 2029. Claimants must meet a minimum effective tax rate of 12% in 2023 and 15% from 2024.

Why it matters

Taiwan’s largest chipmakers, including the foundries that make most AI accelerators, get tax relief for keeping advanced research and equipment spending at home through 2029.
