Singapore announces Bridge2Tech: 3,000 year-long internships over three years as AI takes junior tasks
See how this story connectsSenior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Tan Kiat How announced Bridge2Tech at the Singapore Computer Society’s TechConnect 2026, a set of initiatives under the TIP Alliance+ partnership between IMDA, the ITE, polytechnics and autonomous universities. It expands support for year-long internships, with the aim of 3,000 curriculum-linked placements of 10 to 12 months over the next three years, co-designed by institutions and employers and with funding support for employers; The Straits Times reports IMDA co-funding of up to $1,000 a month per intern. Tan said AI can now assist with many junior tasks, such as writing simple programs, debugging and testing, so students need other ways to gain experience and judgement before their first job. Bridge2Tech also funds up to 90% of approved SCS Skills Pathway courses in cloud, cybersecurity and AI for eligible students, opens a Government Tech Domain Pathway in November after a financial-services pilot with the Institute of Banking and Finance, and plans a HealthTech pathway for 2027. More than 200 employers have pledged support for skills-based hiring under TIP Alliance+.
Why it matters
Singapore is funding a specific answer to AI displacing entry-level technical work: a year of paid, credit-bearing placement for students before they graduate, with the outcomes to be monitored.
