Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) said on 10 October 2024 that ABCI 3.0 would replace its public AI computing service, with 766 servers holding 6,128 NVIDIA H200 GPUs and a peak of 6.2 exaflops at half precision. Trial use was planned from November 2024 and general availability by mid-January 2025, with a discounted rate for development projects.

Why it matters

Japanese companies and universities training models gained access to a government-run GPU cloud about 7 to 13 times faster than its predecessor, at subsidised hourly rates.
