Japan merges three AI guidelines into one voluntary set for businesses

See how this story connects

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry published the AI Guidelines for Business version 1.0 on 19 April 2024 after public comment. The voluntary guidelines merge the earlier AI R&D Guidelines, AI Utilization Guidelines and Governance Guidelines for Implementation of AI Principles, and they set out duties for three groups: AI developers, AI providers and AI business users. The ministries call it a living document to be updated.

Why it matters

Companies building or using AI in Japan got one voluntary government reference for AI risk practice, which the ministries have since updated to version 1.2.
