The Future of Life Institute’s open letter, dated 22 March 2023, asks all AI labs to pause for at least six months the training of AI systems more capable than GPT-4. It asks for the pause to be public and verifiable, and for governments to impose a moratorium if labs do not agree quickly. The letter page shows more than 31,000 signatures.

Why it matters

No lab paused, and over the rest of 2023 governments turned to voluntary commitments, a safety summit and safety institutes.
