India’s NPCI launches Hello! UPI for voice payments in Hindi and English

See how this story connects

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das launched Hello! UPI, built by the National Payments Corporation of India, at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai on 6 September 2023. It lets users make UPI payments by voice through UPI apps, phone calls and connected devices, confirming each payment with their UPI PIN. NPCI built the Hindi and English payment language models with the government’s Bhashini programme and AI4Bharat at IIT Madras, with more Indian languages to follow.

Why it matters

India’s national payments system added AI voice commands to UPI, so people who cannot read or type in English can start payments by speaking.
