India’s Union Cabinet approved three semiconductor units under the India Semiconductor Mission on 29 February 2024. Tata Electronics and Taiwan’s PSMC will build a Rs 91,000 crore fab in Dholera, Gujarat, for 50,000 wafer starts a month; Tata will build a Rs 27,000 crore assembly and test plant in Morigaon, Assam; and CG Power, with Renesas and Stars Microelectronics, a Rs 7,600 crore plant in Sanand, Gujarat.

Why it matters

The approvals put state money behind a commercial wafer fab in India, giving chip buyers and AI hardware makers a planned source of chips outside East Asia.
