Indonesia asks digital platforms to disclose how they use AI and algorithms

See how this story connects

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) asked digital platforms to label AI-generated content, give reasons for content moderation or restrictions, explain reductions in content reach, and offer complaint and appeal mechanisms users can reach. Mediodecci Lustarini, Secretary of the Directorate General of Digital Space Oversight, said at a dialogue in Jakarta on 22 October 2026 that moderation must judge the content, not the account, and that criticism of the government is free expression. The ministry said it never asked platforms to remove or restrict posts about forest and land fires and has asked Meta to clarify Meta AI answers that linked it to such restrictions, adding that a chatbot’s answer is not a company statement or proof. It pointed developers to Ministerial Circular No. 9 of 2023 on AI ethics and said a draft Presidential Regulation on AI ethics and the National AI Roadmap 2026–2029 are being prepared.

Why it matters

Until the presidential regulation on AI ethics is adopted, the 2023 ethics circular is what the ministry holds platforms to on labelling, moderation and appeals.
