Google’s AI river-flood model gives five-day warnings in ungauged basins, Nature reports

See how this story connects

Google Research published a Nature paper on 20 March 2024 on predicting extreme floods worldwide, including in river basins without stream gauges. Its AI model gave forecasts at four to five days’ lead time that were as reliable as or better than the Global Flood Awareness System’s same-day nowcasts. The model runs Google’s Flood Hub forecasts for river reaches in over 80 countries.

Why it matters

Countries with few river gauges got AI flood forecasts that stay reliable four to five days ahead, published through Google’s Flood Hub and alerts in Search, Maps and Android.
