UK government shelves £1.3bn for Edinburgh exascale computer and AI Research Resource

See how this story connects

The new UK government confirmed on 2 August 2024 that it would not go ahead with £1.3 billion of tech and AI funding announced by its predecessor. That covered £800 million for an exascale supercomputer at the University of Edinburgh and £500 million more for the AI Research Resource; DSIT said the money had never been allocated in budgets.

Why it matters

UK researchers lost the planned national exascale machine and an expansion of public AI compute, though a £300m AI Research Resource grant continued.
