Paris-based Mistral AI released its flagship model Mistral Large on 26 February 2024, supporting English, French, German, Spanish and Italian, together with a beta of its Le Chat assistant. The same day Mistral partnered with Microsoft to offer its models on Azure AI, and the Financial Times reported that Microsoft would take a small, undisclosed stake.

Why it matters

Azure customers could buy a European frontier model alongside OpenAI’s, and Mistral gained a US cloud distributor and shareholder.
