The European Chips Act entered into force on 21 September 2023. Its three pillars include the Chips for Europe Initiative, run mainly by the Chips Joint Undertaking and backed by €3.3 billion of EU funds that member states are expected to match. The EU’s stated target is to double its global semiconductor market share to 20% by 2030.

Why it matters

Chipmakers and research centres in the EU gained a legal framework for pilot lines, design platforms and support for new fabs, which later EU AI compute plans build on.
