Spain approves the statute of AESIA, its AI supervisory agency in A Coruña

See how this story connects

Spain’s Council of Ministers approved Royal Decree 729/2023 of 22 August, published in the Official State Gazette on 2 September 2023, setting the statute of the Spanish Agency for the Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA), seated in A Coruña. The agency supervises, inspects and can sanction under national and EU AI rules, and also advises, runs voluntary quality seals and promotes regulatory sandboxes. Its governing council had to be constituted within three months.

Why it matters

Spain set up a national AI supervisor with inspection and sanction powers before the EU AI Act was agreed, so AI providers in Spain had a named authority to deal with.
