Beijing start-up Moonshot AI released Kimi K2 on 11 July 2025, a mixture-of-experts model with 1 trillion total and 32 billion active parameters, pre-trained on 15.5 trillion tokens with its MuonClip optimiser. The weights are under a modified MIT licence that requires products with more than 100 million monthly users or $20 million in monthly revenue to show “Kimi K2” in their interface.

Why it matters

Builders of coding and agent tools gained an open-weights model at the trillion-parameter scale from a Chinese start-up, with few licence limits below large-company thresholds.
