Chile launches Latam-GPT, an open regional language model of about 70bn parameters

See how this story connects

Chile’s government and the National Center for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA) launched Latam-GPT on 10 February 2026, an open language model of nearly 70bn parameters built with the development bank CAF and Amazon Web Services. It was trained on an 18-terabyte corpus of Spanish, Portuguese and English text gathered through more than 50 partnerships in 15 countries of the region.

Why it matters

Latin American governments and developers gain an open model trained on regional text, an alternative base for local services that do not want to depend on US or Chinese models.
