First UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance meets in Geneva on panel's first report

ProgrammeGovernmentFrontierINTLConfirmed

The first session of the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance ran on 6-7 July 2026 in Geneva, informed by the preliminary report of the 40-member Independent International Scientific Panel on AI released on 1 July. The panel, co-chaired by Yoshua Bengio and Maria Ressa, began its three-year term on 12 February after a General Assembly vote of 117-2 with the US and Paraguay against; the next Dialogue is set for May 2027 in New York.

Why it matters

It is the only universal forum on AI governance, and the US vote against the panel shows its standing will depend on participation beyond Washington.
