Defence reports acceleration in AI adoption over the past three months

See how this story connects

Chris Crozier, Defence’s chief AI and information officer, told a joint select committee hearing on AI on Friday 30 October 2026 that Defence has seen an absolute acceleration in AI application and adoption over the past three months. Crozier, who was appointed CIO in mid-2023 and has also been chief AI officer for about 12 weeks, said he and others in the department interviewed over 60 Defence representatives actively engaged in applying artificial intelligence. Defence currently relies on the Australian Signals Directorate to broker access to frontier AI models, though Crozier said a good open-source model plus an excellent software harness can deliver a tremendous outcome.

Why it matters

Crozier said his role is to keep Defence’s AI work coherent across warfighting and business productivity uses, and that Defence is focusing on open-source models with a strong harness at an aggregate level.
