Stargate UAE’s first gigawatt would use triple the power of all UAE data centres

See how this story connects

The UAE is building power for AI data centres, including a $6.1 billion solar and battery project due in 2027 and a $980 million gas-fired plant at Al Dhafra. At full load, Stargate UAE’s first gigawatt alone would use almost three times as much electricity as every data centre in the country uses today. The full 5GW campus would add demand equal to a quarter of current national electricity consumption.

Why it matters

AI projects in the UAE need new generation to be built, and state-backed co-ordination of generation, transmission and demand lets the UAE build faster than the US, where developers can wait years in a grid interconnection queue holding about 2,300GW of projects.
