Anthropic 'observed exposure' study finds no jobless rise but fewer young hires
Anthropic economists combined O*NET tasks, theoretical LLM exposure estimates and real Claude usage into an 'observed exposure' measure. Actual use covers only 33% of computer and maths tasks against 94% theoretically feasible, and 30% of workers have zero exposure; there is no significant rise in unemployment among highly exposed workers since late 2022, but job-entry rates for 22-25-year-olds in exposed occupations are about 14% lower than in 2022 (marginally significant).
Why it matters
A frontier lab using its own usage data corroborated the entry-level hiring squeeze while showing actual AI use lags far behind theoretical capability.
