Google releases MedGemma 1.5 and MedASR open medical models
Google Research released MedGemma 1.5, an open model adding CT, MRI and histopathology interpretation, longitudinal chest X-ray analysis and lab-report extraction, alongside MedASR, a medical speech-to-text model it says makes 58-82% fewer errors than generalist systems on dictation benchmarks. Both are free for research and commercial use; Google also said AIIMS is using MedGemma to build health foundation models for India.
Why it matters
Open-weight medical models let hospitals and startups, including in India, build imaging and scribe tools without relying on closed APIs, while leaving validation to each deployer.
