UK Strategic Defence Review bets on AI, autonomy and a 'digital targeting web'

PolicyDefenceGovernmentGBConfirmed

The UK's Strategic Defence Review calls for a shift to greater use of autonomy and AI across the armed forces, a protected Defence AI Investment Fund, and an uncrewed systems centre with initial capability by February 2026. The government committed more than £1bn to a Digital Targeting Web linking sensors, decision-makers and weapons by 2027, and at least 10% of the equipment procurement budget each year for novel technologies.

Why it matters

Ring-fenced money and a 10% novel-tech floor make the UK MOD a more predictable buyer for defence AI and autonomy suppliers, with lessons from Ukraine explicitly driving requirements.
