ETSI publishes a technical specification for preventing harmful deepfakes

See how this story connects

ETSI, one of the three European standards organisations, released Technical Specification TS 104 275 on 29 October 2026. Written by its Technical Committee on Securing Artificial Intelligence, it sets measures for developers and operators of generative AI systems: risk assessment before release, human oversight, content filtering, labelling of AI-generated content, user warnings, ongoing monitoring and records showing the controls work. It includes test scenarios with pass and fail criteria and builds on ETSI’s EN 304 223 baseline security standard for AI models and systems.

Why it matters

Developers of generative AI get a published test of whether their deepfake safeguards work, which ETSI says supports the EU AI Act’s aims beyond high-risk systems.
